Here is how you can watch the 104th Grey Cup between the Ottawa Redblacks and Calgary Stampeders
Sunday marks the conclusion of the Canadian Football League season, when the Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Redblacks battle for the 104th Grey Cup game from Toronto’s BMO Field
The Calgary Stampeders enter the championship game as heavy favorites as they steamrolled the competition all season. The Stampeders went 15-2-1 in the regular season, with their only losses coming in week one and in their regular season finale when they rested their starters. In the West Final, Calgary demolished the BC Lions, 42-15.
The one draw came against their opposition Sunday. The two teams played to a 26-26 tie, in Ottawa on July 8th in both teams’ third game. Calgary started the season 1-1-1, before going on a 14 game winning streak. In the second meeting, Calgary dominated Ottawa. Calgary won 48-23, jumping out 30-18 halftime lead. In both games, Bo-Levi Mitchell threw for over 350 yards. But again Jerome Messam was held under 40 yards rushing. In both games, Ottawa starting quarterback Henry Burris did not play.
At the CFL awards, held mid-week prior to the Grey Cup in Toronto, Calgary cleaned up. Head Coach Dave Dickenson was named coach of the year. Running back Jerome Messam was named most outstanding Canadian after he led the league in rushing, and having almost 1700 all-purpose yards. Left tackle Derek Dennis won most outstanding lineman, after Calgary gave up just 20 sacks in the regular season. Receiver DaVaris Daniels won most outstanding rookie, after an incredible debut season, that saw him find the end zone nine times. Quarterback Bo-Levi Mitchell won most outstanding player after he finished second in passing yards and led the league in touchdown passes.
While Calgary’s offense gets most of the headlines, defensively Charleston Hughes led the CFL in sacks, and defensive back Jamar Wall is known for his ball hawking tendencies. The Calgary defense gave up just 369 points in the regular season and tied for the league led in sacks. On special teams, Calgary ranks in the top four of all statistics.
The keys to victory for Calgary are simple, dominant at the point of attack offensively. If Calgary can get Messam rolling, its difficult to envision Ottawa getting enough stops to score more points than they allow. Calgary needs to protect Mitchell. They have been doing it all season, they need to continue doing so for one last game.
Playing in the Grey Cup is something Calgary has become accustom to. This will mark the third time since 2012, that the Stampeders have played in the game. Calgary last won in 2014, when Mitchell was the game’s most outstanding player.
For the second straight season, the Redblacks are playing in the Grey Cup. Last season, the Edmonton Eskimos defeated Ottawa 26-20. This season the third season expansion franchise was somewhat disappointing as they went just 8-9-1 in the regular season. In the East final, the Redblacks got some revenge for last year’s Grey Cup loss, defeating Edmonton 35-23, to earn another Grey Cup birth.
Ottawa is led by former Stampeders starting quarterback Henry Burris. In 2008, Burris led Calgary to a Grey Cup championship. In his past two Grey Cup trips, Burris lost as the starter with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2013, and last season with Ottawa.
Burris leads a Redblack offense that can put up a lot of points. Four different Redblacks receivers went over the 1000 yard mark. But no matter, how good the Redblacks’ offense is, this game will come down to their defense, and that will be the biggest question mark in Sunday’s game.
For Ottawa, to have any chance of winning, they have to get pressure on Mitchell and stop Messam on the ground for a third time. Ottawa must also play a turnover free game. If Ottawa starts making mistakes, the chances of them becoming champions become slim to none. Ottawa will likely need a play in special teams to swing the tide in their favor. If they can return another kick for a touchdown, it will increase their chances of winning.
The one advantage Ottawa is likely to have, it will be that the Toronto crowd will likely feature a large number of Redblacks supporters. With Ottawa less than a six-hour drive to Toronto, expect more of their fans to make the trip to the Grey Cup.
