The International Champions Cup is back, the annual friendly tournament taking place across several continents and bringing some of the biggest clubs out on tour to put on matches many fans would previously have only dreamed of seeing in person. It kicks off this summer with a huge matchup featuring Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan in China.

Milan have been dominating the headlines, making one big transfer after another, signing the likes of Leonardo Bonucci, Hakan Calhanoglu, Ricardo Rodriguez, and more as they chase redemption in the form of another Serie A title after so many years of struggle. Dortmund’s signings have been more modest, but the sudden firing of Thomas Tuchel and hiring of ex-Ajax boss Peter Bosz earlier this summer makes them a story well worth watching, and everyone wants to see where their team stands as they head towards a massively important Bundesliga campaign.

Fun Borussia Dortmund player to watch: Mario Götze

Götze isn’t the young up-and-comer he used to be, or the kind of fringe or forgotten player that we typically highlight in these kinds of posts. But the midfield dynamo does have one thing working in his favor as a big story for this match: the fact that as recently as a few months ago, it looked like he might never play again. Götze has been diagnosed with a serious metabolic disorder that ended his season prematurely, and seriously threatened to end his career. He’s worked his tail off to get back on the pitch, and playing in this match would be a huge step in the right direction for the young German.

Fun AC Milan player to watch: Andre Silva

Lost in the endless headlines and excitement around Milan these days is one of their first new signings of the summer: Silva. In fact, Milan themselves seem to have forgotten him to some extent, given rumors that they’re planning on signing another big-name striker in the coming weeks — potentially including Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But Silva is legitimately a great young striker himself, and he’s going to get a chance to shine in a big way in this match.

Compared to other friendlies, is this worth my time?

AC Milan are trying to get their massively revamped squad to show some degree of cohesion, while Borussia Dortmund are in the middle of some changes themselves, with a new manager and a lot of questions in their squad. This should be a competitive match, but don’t expect it to be pretty. 5/10.
